Four bands for the price of one is a bargain, anytime Phillip Phillips comes to town. The Violent Femmes, a 90's band, entered the Southside Ballroom not alone. The girl behind me was excited at her first concert while the guy next to me came to see the Violent Femmes. Next time, pack some earplugs, as these things get loud. Maybe nobody fought the Dallas traffic to see the first band, Thick, a female trio with angry songs in classic punk fashion. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, a band in bright yellow satin suits, took the stage with punk versions of popular songs, including Dolly Parton's Jolene. They were unforgettable. If not for being a huge Phillip Phillips fan, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes would have been the highlight of the evening. The Violent Femmes, big in the 1990's, performed their well-known songs like American Music and Blister in the Sun. Singer Gordon Gano's quirky voice and bass player Brian Ritch's thunderous bass lines were memorable. Phillip Phillips, an Irish punk rock band, impressed with their live performance and fan favorites like Drunken Lullabies. The crowd was mellow, maybe worn out from singing along with the Violent Femmes. The variety of music genres that night was a delight.
